Bees

Bees are a social insect with a colony size ranging from 4000
Bee queens live 3-5 years and are replaced by the colony when their egg production slows

Bees produce honey and beeswax from plant pollen (protein and fat) and nectars (carbohydrates). In the pursuit of food, bees pollinate many plants.

Husbandry
Bee keeping to produce honey and wax requires managing the colony by providing a suitable hive with an active queen and harvesting excess honey and wax without weakening the colony.

Bee larvae can also be eaten.

Issues for CELSS
Not only do bees produce CO2, traditional beekeeping methods utilize smoke, which will certainly impact air quality in the CELSS. Bees also require a certain minimum range and plant variety.

Bees, greenhouses issues and CELSS
Biosphere2 team has tried to introduce the bees, but they do not seem to survive well in a greenhouse. Furthermore, they are a danger in too small environment. As against the bumblebees seem perfect : the huge greenhouses of tomatoes and strawberries in Spain are using the bumblebees that pollinate well, do not bite, and seem to enjoy in a closed environment
