Welcome to the CELSS knowledge base wiki.
The purpose of this site is to collect and share knowledge pertaining to Closed Ecology Life Support Systems (CELSS).
CELSS are a scientific and cultural endeavor to create self-reliant regenerative environments that can support and maintain human life via agricultural means. There are various motivations behind the endeavor that range from better understanding the Earth's ecosystem to being able to duplicate smaller scale human habitats in space.
The major components of CELSS are characterized by human needs:
In thermodynamic terms, 'Closed' means that no physical matter is needed to be dumped from or added to the system in order to maintain equilibrium. Energy exchange in the form of sunlight, heat, etc is permitted. This is essentially the same operating principle as the Earth's own biosphere.
Your assistance is much appreciated in helping to develop this knowledge base-- it is an ongoing project important to the survival of our species! To contribute to the work here, please register as a user and jump right in.
